Critically Acclamimed Series Premiers on NTV7
Life is full of surprises – especially in ntv7’s latest upcoming breakthrough comedy drama, 'Drop Dead Diva', which airs every Tuesday at 8.30 p.m., starting 8th March, only on ntv7, the Home of Feel Good!
Debbie (Deb) Dobkins (played by Brooke D’Orsay in the pilot and in flashbacks), was a beautiful model who was a little self-absorbed and shallow. Jane Bingum on the other hand, was a brilliant attorney with low self-esteem. They have absolutely nothing in common until the day they die.
Deb was killed in a car crash, while Jane was shot in the head by one of the client from her law firm on the very same day. As Deb’s soul enters the gates of Heaven, she finds herself declared a self-centered “zero” (which means she has performed zero good deeds and zero bad deeds during her time on earth – she is simply shallow) by the gatekeeper, Fred (Ben Feldman). Not liking what she hears, she presses the return button to her former body, hoping to get back to earth. Deb eventually gets her wish, only to be brought back to life in the body of the recently deceased, intelligent, overweight Jane.
Petrified, Deb (now played by breakout star, Brooke Elliott) did not just get Jane’s body, but her brain as well. She later finds out how smart she can be with her new brain. Deb, however, believes the only thing that she can do now is balance the life she knew before and the life she's forced to deal with.
Deb who is afraid to be labeled as insane, takes up the courage eventually to tell her unexplainable story to best friend, Stacy Barrett (April Bowlby). Initially horrified, Stacy discovers the truth as Deb reveals their childhood secrets that only the both of them know. In addition to Stacy, only Fred (who was demoted to guardian angel and had been assigned to watch over Deb at the law firm) knows Jane’s true identity.
As time goes by, Deb begins to rediscover her past while learning more about her inherited body's current life, and how Jane was treated when she was alive. Deb who always thinks that looks are far more important than anything else slowly discovers the meaning of inner beauty in her new human form.
Having Jane’s brain also helps Deb to find the ability to juggle legal cases, aided by her best friend and assistant, Teri Lee (Margaret Cho). Unfortunately, Deb realises that she could not survive in the law firm by just having a smart brain. With her usual self comes into play, Deb who dislikes waking up early in the morning, abiding to schedules, and attending meetings, fails to meet the expectations of her boss, J. Parker (Josh Stamberg) and decides to quit as an attorney.
With the encouragement from her guardian angel and Teri, Deb slowly taps into the world of attorneys and falls in love with the life of Jane. Besides gaining ground in her career, Deb also receives much affirmation from her colleagues, especially Kim Kasswell (Kate Levering) who used to poke fun of Jane. Kim now learns to walk like a runway model from Deb who was once an aspiring model.
Meanwhile, Deb also attempts to reconnect incognito with her still-grieving boyfriend, Grayson Kent (Jackson Hurst), who just started working at the law firm. Deb however, is too coward to tell Grayson the truth about what had happened to her, as she is afraid that he could not accept her, especially when she is much heavier now!
Drop Dead Diva also features guest stars like Rosie O’Donnell, Paula Abdul, Cybill Shepherd, Chad Lowe, and many more.
As Deb confronts the challenges of her adventurous new life, love, and career, she must learn to reconcile her beauty queen ways with her brilliant new mind – finding surprises at every turn. Don’t forget to catch Drop Dead Diva, which airs every Tuesday at 8.30 p.m., starting 8th March, only on ntv7, the Home of Feel Good!
